A half-back flanker who played in Hawthorn's first ever team, Pickford was one of the few players from that side to manage more than fifty games for the Hawks. Indeed, he was the first Hawthorn player to reach that mark in the VFL.

Pickford played for Victoria against New South Wales in 1926, and was a fine servant of the club in its VFL infancy.

He has the dubious honour of being the only player to have played in every game in the 1926 season, a horror year when 41 players were used and practically every big name missed multiple games through injury.
