Many Hawk supporters expressed concern when Salmon was traded at the age of 31 from Essendon as part of the Darren Jarman deal. However the gamble was one that well and truly paid off, with the Fish earning his place amongst the club's great ruckmen in his 100 games and five years at Glenferrie.

Used mostly as a full forward by Kevin Sheedy, Salmon played almost exclusively as a ruckman at Hawthorn and proved himself to be a natural at the role. Fish would use his height to win numerous tap-outs, and his ability to read the play was almost unmatched. Countless times he dropped a kick behind play and cut off opposition attacks with a brave mark in defence.

After missing the early part of his first season with a calf injury, Fish made his debut in the Whitten Oval mud in Round 4 and was one of our best players. This set a pattern for the rest of the year, and Salmon ended up winning the Peter Crimmins Trophy for club champion and finishing equal seventh in the Brownlow Medal.

1997 was an even more successful year, missing only one game through injury, and winning his second club champion award, Victorian selection, All-Australian selection and another top 10 Brownlow finish.

Salmon was extremely consistent and often rucked unchanged during games. One of his best performances came in the memorable two-point victory over the Kangaroos in 1998 at Waverley. Salmon picked up 32 possessions, 6 marks, 35 hitouts and 22 clearances in a brilliant performance.

Fish won the Michael Tuck Medal after dominating the 1999 Ansett Cup final at Waverley against Port Adelaide. Another consistent year in 1999 was ended prematurely when his jaw was broken by Nigel Smart at Football Park. Salmon found the going a bit tougher in 2000, battling injuries and wear and tear. However, he brought up his 300th game against Melbourne, and his 100th game and final for Hawthorn against the Kangaroos in the semi-final.

A good measure of Salmon's standing was illustrated when he was named on the interchange of the Hawthorn Team of the Century. A shock comeback in 2002 for the Bombers surprised many, but no one can question the contribution he made to the Hawthorn Football Club.
