The young Western Australian full back was a key part of the Hawthorn line up for several years, before the club lost patience with him. As a reserved young kid, Jonathon Hay was recruited from East Fremantle in the 1996 National Draft with pick 36.
Always seen a key defender, Hay served his apprenticeship in other areas of defence while Mark Graham toiled at full back. However, it soon became apparent that Hay needed to learn the craft and it wasn’t long until he was thrown to the last line of defence against much older and stronger opponents. While raw, Hay used his speed and brain to often surprise his more experienced opponent, which led to big wraps and a mountain of expectation on Hay – expectation that with home-sickness almost led him to go back home to Perth.
However, by 2000 Hay had bulked up enough to be a major contributor in the Hawks finals campaign, and in 2001 he was adjudged the best full back in the league when he was named in the All-Australian team.
2002-2004 were a disaster for Hay, as persistent knee injuries have wrecked his fitness base and confidence. Hay returned to some form in 2005, although his kicking and decision making out of defence was still a matter of serious concern for Hawthorn fans.
At the end of 2005 the club secured a trade of picks 14 and 18 from North Melbourne and Hay was shipped off. The trade proved to be a massive win for the club, as Hay quickly lost all confidence and after several terrible performances was banished to the VFL. It was revealed at the end of the season he was suffering from bipolar depression. |
