The ex-Fitzroy and Brisbane defender has become a key forward in the Hawthorn line up and a cult hero in the process. Initially drafted by Fitzroy in the 1993 National Draft, Barker was one of the eight players that went to Brisbane at the start of 1997 in the merger deal between Brisbane and Fitzroy. Starved of opportunities in Brisbane, Barker was traded to Hawthorn (along with Nathan Chapman) for a young Brad Scott and pick 51 at the end of 1997.
It wasn't until late 2000 that Hawthorn started to see the best of Barker's abilities when he was moved up forward and starting kicking goals as the Hawks charged into the finals series. 2001 was undoubtedly Barker's best year as he played centre half forward in Nick Holland's absence, and almost earned All-Australian honours in the process. Barker finished 2001 as the clubs leading goal kicker (47), including the winner in the famous victory at Port Adelaide in the semi-final.
If 2001 was as good as it gets for Barker, 2002 onwards are as bad as it gets. Plagued by osteitis pubis and other injuries, Barker has looked a shadow of his former self.
2005 is probably Johnny's last chance to get back to the form he once had. |
