He played that role in his first game (a flogging at the hands of Port Adelaide), kicking a goal in that outing after being promoted to the senior list late in the season.
2002 was a forgettable season for Osborne, managing only one game for Hawthorn and battling to have a significant impact at Box Hill.
However, 2003 was a revelation, as Osborne got the opportunity to fill the role of small defender in the injury-enforced absence of Luke McCabe, and grabbed the opportunity with relish. He delighted Hawthorn fans with his hard-nosed, physical approach, and stitched up a succession of small forwards during a brilliant season.
A bout of osteitis pubis has limited Osborne's preparation for the 2004 season, and he struggled to recapture his form. Too often he concentrated on the man, and not the ball. Much of 2005 went the same way, and 2006 needs to be the year where Osborne establishes himself as a legitimate AFL footballer. |
