Another Box Hill success story, Matthew Ball joined the AFL ranks the hard way.

The brother of St Kilda star Luke, Matthew was original brought to Hawthorn via pick 42 of the 2000 Rookie Draft. He struggled to impact at Box Hill, and was delisted after the 2001 season.

Keen to prove himself capable at the top level, Ball stayed at the Mustangs and worked extremely hard throughout seasons 2002 and 2003, culminating in the Best and Fairest award for the 2003 Grand Finalists, and selection at pick 51 in the 2003 National Draft.

Ball was a hard-running, negating midfielder with great concentration and terrific work ethic. He made his debut in Round 4 against the Western Bulldogs and put in some reasonable performances, most notably when he tagged his brother.

Bally struggled to cement a spot in the 22 under Al Clarkson, spending most of his time at Box Hill. He was eventually delisted at the end of 2006.
